The Lens Take:
Insurance coverage in India is rising, driven by schemes like Ayushman Bharat. But out-of-pocket costs are climbing just as fast, with hospitalization expenses nearly doubling across both rural and urban areas.
At the same time, people are steadily moving away from public hospitals toward private care. Not because it’s better by choice, but because public systems are struggling to keep up.
This creates a gap where insurance exists, but affordability doesn’t. The system expands access on paper, while real financial pressure shifts back to households.
This isn’t just a healthcare issue. It’s a signal that India’s model is drifting toward private dependence without fixing the public backbone.
