AI needs data to improve, and increasingly, that data is coming from people at work. However, the way it is being collected is raising new questions. Companies are now exploring tools that track how employees actually use their computers, from mouse movements to keystrokes. While this may seem like a logical step in building smarter systems, it introduces a deeper tension. Just because something is allowed does not mean it is accepted.

Meta has reportedly begun rolling out internal systems designed to capture how employees interact with their computers in real time. This includes tracking clicks, navigation patterns, and keystrokes, with the goal of training AI models that can replicate everyday work tasks. From a technical standpoint, If AI systems are meant to perform human tasks, they require real examples of how those tasks are actually carried out.

However, while the objective may be clear, the implications are far more complex. Legally, such monitoring is largely permissible in the United States, particularly when it takes place on company-owned devices and within official work environments. At the same time, existing regulations have not kept pace with the realities of AI-driven workplaces. Most laws were originally designed to address older forms of surveillance, such as email monitoring or call recording, rather than continuous behavioral tracking used for training intelligent systems.

More importantly, the issue extends beyond legality into ethics. Although companies may present these systems as necessary for innovation, employees often have little meaningful choice in the matter. In theory, consent may exist, but in practice, refusing participation can carry professional consequences. As a result, what appears voluntary can quickly become symbolic. This creates a situation where employees are not only doing their jobs but are also contributing to systems that may eventually replace parts of their work.

At the same time, this level of monitoring signals a broader shift in how work is being defined. Traditionally, such surveillance was associated with gig workers or operational roles. Now, it is extending into knowledge work, where employees were once expected to operate with a higher degree of autonomy. Consequently, the boundary between performing work and generating training data is becoming increasingly blurred.

Why this matters:

This development raises important questions about how work is evolving in the age of AI. Employees are no longer just delivering output; they are also becoming a continuous source of data that fuels future systems. At the same time, this shift can affect trust within organizations. When monitoring increases, autonomy often feels reduced, and when consent is perceived as forced rather than voluntary, engagement and morale can decline. As a result, companies may gain short-term efficiency but risk long-term cultural and productivity challenges.

More broadly, this reflects a growing tension between innovation and privacy. As AI development accelerates, companies are actively seeking real-world behavioral data to improve their systems, and the workplace has become one of the most accessible sources. However, regulatory frameworks have not kept pace with this shift, which means organizations are currently operating in a space where legal permission exists without clearly defined ethical boundaries. Over time, this gap is likely to lead to stronger regulations and new expectations around how employee data can be used. Until then, companies are effectively defining the rules of the AI workplace themselves.

AI needs human behavior to learn, but when that learning comes directly from employees, the equation changes. What appears to be productivity can also become extraction, and what looks like consent may not always be a real choice. Ultimately, the question is not just how companies build smarter systems, but how they balance that progress with fairness, dignity, and trust.
