Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has reopened its refurbished Terminal 2 (T2), marking a major boost to India’s aviation infrastructure. With IndiGo and Air India resuming operations from the upgraded facility, all three terminals, T1, T2, and T3, are now fully functional. The reopening not only enhances capacity but also signals the next phase of Delhi’s airport connectivity overhaul.

The Breakdown
The reopening of T2, closed since April 2024 for a ₹2,500 crore renovation, adds 120 daily domestic flights operated by IndiGo and Air India, according to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). The upgrade brings Delhi airport’s total passenger handling capacity to over 100 million annually, reaffirming its position as India’s busiest aviation hub. The modernization includes expanded check-in zones with biometric boarding gates, enhanced security lanes that reduce processing time by 40 percent, and AI-powered baggage handling systems that track luggage in real time through a mobile app.
Meanwhile, DIAL has announced that construction on the new “Golden Line” metro corridor will begin in early 2026, with completion targeted for mid-2027. The corridor will connect Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, currently 7 kilometers apart and requiring a 25-minute drive during peak hours. The integrated metro station, part of the Aerocity expansion designed by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, is expected to reduce inter-terminal transit time to just 12 minutes. Once complete, the Golden Line will eliminate one of the last connectivity gaps at the airport, creating seamless movement for the estimated 15,000 daily passengers who transfer between domestic and international flights.

Delhi’s infrastructure expansion addresses a uniquely complex challenge. Unlike Mumbai, which handles most traffic through a single integrated terminal, or Bangalore, which is building a second airport to distribute load, Delhi must coordinate operations across three terminals spread over 5,400 acres. As India’s domestic air traffic grew 18 percent in 2024, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Delhi carried 73 million passengers, more than any other Indian airport and approaching the volumes of major international hubs.
The T1 to T3 metro link will be particularly important during peak hours between 6 to 9 AM and 5 to 8 PM, when inter-terminal transfers currently create bottlenecks that delay up to 12 percent of connecting flights, according to aviation analytics firm OAG. By cutting transit time in half, the metro reduces the minimum connection time airlines must build into schedules, potentially allowing Delhi to capture more hub traffic from competitors such as Dubai and Singapore.
The Big Picture:
India is projected to become the world’s third-largest aviation market by 2030, according to the International Air Transport Association. Delhi’s 100 million passenger milestone places it ahead of Frankfurt, which handled 61 million in 2023, and just behind Heathrow and Dubai, which saw 79 million and 87 million passengers respectively, based on Airports Council International data. These developments reflect India’s broader ₹111 lakh crore National Infrastructure Pipeline, which identifies transport connectivity as essential to sustaining 7 to 8 percent annual GDP growth through the decade.
Unlike capacity-focused expansions, Delhi’s approach integrates air and urban rail, a model increasingly adopted by Asian megacities. Singapore’s Changi Airport pioneered direct metro access in the 1990s, and Beijing Daxing opened in 2019 with four rail lines converging beneath its terminal. Delhi’s Golden Line represents India’s first purpose-built inter-terminal metro connection and could serve as a blueprint for Mumbai’s Navi Mumbai International Airport, scheduled to open in 2025.
